Governor Branstad, Lt. Governor Reynolds establish scholarship fund at Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines

July 27, 2011

Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds are supporting Iowa students through a scholarship fund established at the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. These scholarships will support high school and undergraduate students from Iowa who plan to attend Iowa community colleges, colleges or universities. Money raised during Gov. Branstad’s inauguration for the purpose of establishing the Branstad-Reynolds Scholarship Fund for Iowa students will be used for the scholarships.

Scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing a degree in the field of agriculture, students pursuing a degree in a medical or health related field, and students or who are children of service members who gave their lives while on active duty since September 11, 2001.

“Lieutenant Governor Reynolds and I are pleased to partner with the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines to award high-achieving Iowa students scholarships as they pursue their degrees,” said Branstad. “Each year, The Branstad-Reynolds Scholarship Fund will award $30,000 in scholarships to individuals who qualify for the awards.”

Donations may also be made by mailing a check to Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, 1915 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50309 and writing Branstad-Reynolds Scholarship fund in the memo line.

“I would like to thank the individuals and organizations who have contributed their time and resources to make this endeavor possible,” said Reynolds. “It is our hope that these annual scholarships will provide Iowa students, who stay in Iowa to seek a higher education, the opportunity to succeed, while reducing the financial burden that coincides with earning a degree.”

The Branstad-Reynolds Scholarship Fund was established in December of 2010 by then Governor-elect Branstad and Lt. Governor-elect Reynolds to support Iowa students pursuing a degree in the field of agriculture, students pursuing a degree in a medical or health related field, and students or who are children of service members who gave their lives while on active duty since September 11, 2001. By trimming costs at their inauguration in January of 2011, receiving private donations, and giving a portion of ticket sale proceeds to the fund, Gov. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Reynolds were able to raise $700,000 to launch The Branstad-Reynolds Scholarship Fund.
