Sen. Grassley writes to president in support of Gov. Reynolds' disaster declaration request
In a news release from his office Thursday, Senator Chuck Grassley asked the President to grant the request made by Governor Kim Reynolds for a declaration of a major disaster in response to heavy rains, flash flooding, riverine flooding, damaging winds, tornadoes, and hail between July 19 and July 23, 2017.
In a request letter, Grassley wrote, “The Governor determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that an effective response is beyond the capabilities of the State and affected local governments to handle effectively and federal assistance is needed.”
Severe weather July 19 through July 23 caused significant damage to public infrastructure and private property. The seven counties included in this request are Allamakee, Bremer, Buchanan, Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, and Mitchell. A presidential declaration of a major disaster is necessary to trigger release of federal funds for public assistance.
