Iowa was named the No. 1 state in the nation on Tuesday by U.S. News and World Report. The headlines in the hours to follow touted Iowa’s “best state” status.
"Iowa truly is a place where if you work hard, dream big, anything is possible," Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said Tuesday on "CBS This Morning." "And I'm honestly a product of that. I grew up in a small town in Iowa, town of about 500 people. Kevin [her husband] and I, when we were raising our three daughters, to make ends meet I checked at a grocery store during the weekends and on nights. And even with all of that, I'm sitting here today as the governor of the state of Iowa, and I think it's reflective of the opportunities that exist within our state."
New York is no Iowa — and that’s a bad thing, according to a report released Tuesday morning.
The second annual Best States study from U.S. News & World Report ranked New York as the 25th best state in the nation, down from 17 a year ago.
Iowa took the prize as the best state in the nation, followed by Minnesota and Utah.
Daily Nonpareil: FIELD OF DREAMS
Score one for the Hawkeye State.
Iowa is the No. 1 state in the country, according to a new study from U.S. News & World Report.
“U.S. News & World Report is a respected news source, and I’m very pleased to see Iowa listed as No. 1 in their Best State rankings,” said Dan Koenig, president and CEO of the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce. “What impressed me the most was that Iowa was ranked in the top ten for health care, education, opportunity, infrastructure and quality of life. Scoring in the Top 10 of eight measured categories is impressive.”“
Studies and reports like these are highly read, generate nationwide attention and positive exposure for the state of Iowa and the City (of) Council Bluffs,” Koenig added. “If a business or individual is considering locating here, this study will certainly help reinforce those decisions. And, this report makes us feel good about ourselves and boosts our sense of pride.”
“For Iowa as an entire state to be ranked number one is very exciting to all of us from river to river,” Greater Des Moines Partnership CEO Jay Byers said. “It is very exciting to be able to share that story.”
Iowans told KCCI that the quality of life in the state of Iowa simply cannot be beat.
Mason City resident Les Weitzel agrees that the Hawkeye State is the best state, but believes the ranking for quality of life is a bit low.
"I've lived here all of my life, and I really like it. I think they're higher than 9th, but if that's what they say, I agree with it," Weitzel says.
Marie Lewis, who is visiting the state on business from Wisconsin, sees why Iowa is ranked #1.
"The people here are really nice. The area looks really clean, which I like, and there's a lot to see and do," Lewis says.
