Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to remain at half-staff  through sunset on Sunday, July 10, 2022, in honor and remembrance of the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.  Shinzo was assassinated in Japan. 

ā€œI’m saddened by the tragic death of former Japan Prime Minister Abe Shinzo,ā€ said Gov. Reynolds. ā€œHe was a great leader who cared so deeply for his nation and for unity. Kevin and I join with Iowans in sending our condolences to the Shinzo family and the people of Japan.ā€ 

The governor’s order is issued in conjunction with President Biden’s proclamation to lower all United States flags to half-staff for the same length of time.  Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.  

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flags at half-staff for the same length of time. 

  • Flags are currently lowered on Friday, July 8, 2022 for the shootings in Highland Park, Illinois and in honor of a WWII veteran from Iowa.  

  • Flags should remain lowered on Saturday, July 9, 2022 for the shootings in Highland Park, Illinois, in honor of a fallen soldier from Iowa, and the assassination of Abe Shinzo. 

  • Flags should remain lowered on Sunday, July 10, 2022 for the assassination of Abe Shinzo. 

  • Flags should remain lowered until sunset on Monday, July 11, 2022 in honor of fallen Coralville Police Sergeant John Williams.
