Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff immediately until midnight in honor and remembrance of U.S. Representative Don Young of Alaska. Representative Young died on March 18, 2022, at the age of 88. He was considered the dean of the U.S. House, as he was the longest-serving member of the current Congress.
“We honor Congressman Young’s tremendous dedication to public service for our country,” said. Gov. Reynolds. “Through his years, Congressman Young fought hard for the people of Alaska and earned the title of dean of the Congress, serving since 1973. Kevin and I join with Iowans in remembrance of the Congressman’s legacy.”
The governor’s order is issued in conjunction with President Joe Biden’s proclamation to lower the United States’ flag to half-staff.
Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.
Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flags at half-staff for the same length of time.
